Terminal Lance #290 “The Difference: Terminology”
August 30, 2013
If I had a dime for every time a POG told me “I’m basically the grunt of ________,” I’d have like $1.30.
No but really, “grunt” is a term that gets thrown around a lot between MOS’, but grunts are grunts. Typically, anyone calling themselves a “grunt” is supposed to have the moniker of “03” in front of their MOS. Of course, it’s all semantics anyway, but the point is the same. The fact is that the grass is definitely greener on the other side, and it’s not the side of the grunts.
It’s kind of like a white guy saying, “Yeah, I know what it’s like to be black, someone called me a cracker once.”
No, you privileged shit, it’s not the same.
The two are very different world, that is the difference. Being a grunt isn’t just about having “03” or going on deployments. It’s about spending hours in formation for no reason, standing by all the fucking time, going to the armory for 8 hours to clean your rifle again, working parties, and just generally being treated like complete shit. There’s no office hours, there’s no “shop” to report to in the morning, you just do as you’re told.
You are a grunt.
