Terminal Lance #359 “Leave of Absence”

0

Going home is always an odd thing once you’ve enlisted yourself to the services of Uncle Sam.

As much as you don’t want to admit it to yourself, home is never really home again once you leave. You see and do so many things while you’re in, especially if you’ve been on deployment, and returning to the mundane mix of things is never really the same. Within a few days of being on leave you find yourself already wanting to go back to base. There’s nothing wrong with the people at home, they just don’t really get you anymore.

Your new family are the ones you spend every day and night with in the barracks, field and otherwise. The Marines you live with become closer to you than your actual family does. No one ever admits it openly when they come back from the holiday leave block, but they’re glad to be back.

I was never really able to go back home after I left.

Even when I got out of the Corps, I never wanted to return to Portland or anywhere else in Oregon. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I love my family… but once I left, I was gone for good.  I chose a school in the San Francisco bay area and am more than content staying right here.

Anyway, Christmas is coming up, and I’m trying my best to stay on top of things but you know how the holidays are. In any case, I’d like to give a shout out to We Are The Mighty for putting me on their 25 Veterans Poised to Make a Difference in 2015 list! We Are The Mighty is a new military media start up, they’ve got a lot of great guys on their team and you should check them out.

If you’re a Kickstarter backer, make sure you log in to check updates on the page, since I usually only post updates that are visible for backers only. I’ll be posting an update about the book before Christmas so stay tuned for that.
